“Find your own space and listen to the silence.” This was the directive given to us by Billy. Listen to the silence? My whole life I haven’t really taken the time to sit still and listen to silence. I’ve always been constantly moving and always doing something. Today I learned that silence really is golden. In the morning, we rode two hours from our hotel to the Grand Canyon. When I got my first view of the Grand Canyon, I was speechless. As we began our hike a storm popped up and we got rained on. We went to the lodge and waited for the rain to blow over. We finally restarted our hike and walked along the rim of the canyon for about a mile. Once we came to a stop on the hike we were able to look over the ledge and see all of its beauty. Billy told us all to find our space and just sit in silence with ourselves. I never realized how powerful complete silence can be. I have never in my life felt so small or awestruck. It was incredible. After we got to comment on our time in silence, we went back to the lodge where we could take pictures of the Grand Canyon.
We went back to the hotel for some free time to go swimming. After dinner we had plans to go up into the nearby mountains to go stargazing but the clouds were blocking any stars we could see.
Today we were able to experience something so vast and majestic that it would take anyone’s breath away. I can really see why they call it the Grand Canyon.
